December 2010 (Everybody's Home Again)

Searching For Signal is back home in Houston, Texas for the holiday break!

After we catch up on our sleep from our near-death experiences with finals and see our long-lost family members, we plan to play some shows for our old friends.

-January 7th @ Fitzgerald's
--Experimental rock group Featherface is joining us. I'm excited to see what the guys from Free Press/Mango's have done with the place since buying and rescuing the old venue from the tight
grasp of Houston's garage metal bands. Looks like they've revamped it with lots of fresh, new, national touring acts as their weekly newsletter has been riddled with the kinds of art that has pumped the juices of the widely popular Mango's cafe.

--Good friend Fat Tony is setting this Main Street Block Party with TONS of big bands that should prove for a very diverse and captivating show. As of current, I see The Tons Tons, Black and White Years, L.A.X., The Pons, The Literary Giants, Empress Hotel, Glasnost, American Sharks, Satin Hooks, Twin Killers, Daniel Markem, The Handshake, A&A, The Lusitana, Electric Attitude, The Transco Empire, Vivian Pikkles, Zorch, 2011, Jim and the Toms, Unicorn Milk, Finnigan, Low Plane Drifter, and Ammorette performing. Gonna be sickkkk.

In other news, Benny and I successfully made it through No Shave November, as as promised, here are the pics:

Enjoy!

Lastly,
We're going to old bud Jake Robinson's ranch house in Medina, Texas this weekend to celebrate our friend Caroline Dallara's big twenty-first birthday. Be sure to wish her your best. There's no service so it'll be nice to get away for a little while.

In the meantime,
We'll see you around town and at the upcoming shows.

Nuzzles,
Michael

November 2010 (Don't Forget To Not Shave)

Finally, the lovely month of November has arrived and I have more information to impart.

First order of business:
THE 19TH WE PLAY MAGGIE MAE'S (ATX).

This place is dope and I'm so happy we got hooked-up to perform here. Besides the venue's long history, there's a huge rooftop deck (5000 sf!) overlooking Austin's infamous sixth street. Needless to say, I am stoked.

See.
You.
There.
Friends.

Secondly,
It's the time of year when the neck beards, soul patches, and facial follicles flourish! I'm talking about No Shave November. and yes, all four of us are active participants in this year's shenanigans.

John thinks he'll end up looking like a pirate (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).
Matt fears his neck beard will soon develop free will & reasoning abilities (probably a bad thing).
Benny's protest of the cold with the use of flannel shirts unknowingly puts him in a fierce contention to become the next brawny man (awesome).
I will not be able to fly anywhere (funny).

We'll see if we can't get some pictures up here for ya.

In other news,
Fun Fun Fun Fest was, well, FUN.
On Saturday I relaxed with piano musings by The Antlers (Caddywhompus got to play with these guys?!), got my post-punk out with Wavves, ate hey caupcake at Monotonix, got entrapped in a sweaty mosh at newly reunionized Cap'n Jazz, felt Philly circus-vibes from Man Man, harmonized vocals with Dirty Projectors, and split my time between MGMT (sorry, but their new stuff is garbage) and RJD2's synthetic compositions.

On Sunday, skanky possum associate Mother Falcon orchestrated miracles early on in the day, Deakin (Animal Collective founder) pumped out psych-beats, Best Coast sang about past boyfriends and cats, East Coast's Washed Out layered chill waves over my ears, and Yelle turned the dusty park into a french-runway-dance-party deal.

All in all, a good time. Especially when funnel cakes are involved.

On a side note,
Matt got a guinea pig named Annie since that last time we've talked. So sweet. Here's what she looks like. Irrelevantly,
My birthday is this month. Let's see if you can figure out the day without looking at my facebook profile. A challenge, indeed!

Lastly,
If you've read thus far, then thank you. You're the type of person that is probably excited to hear that the mixing of our to-be-released-soon EP is pretty much done. Yes, that's right, Searching For Signal will be putting out NEW MUSIC in the near future. Very near. Winter break release shows? Quite possibly. All I'm saying is brace yourselves, because what I've heard sounds supurb.

Till Then,
Michael

October 2010 (It's Finally Cool Outside)

Oh where do I begin for this month..

Alright, i'll start by addressing the show we were planning with the Skanky Possum on the 15th. It's not happening now, and i'll tell you why:

So we were supposed to play at East Austin Trailer Eatery (E.A.T.) with a collection of bands from the Skank Family Mixtape (if you don't have this yet, i suggest you get it here http://www.skankypossum.bandcamp.com/). With a successful show put on last month, I was disappointed when Talib (who is a major contributor and all-around-cool-guy heavily involved in the hapenings and events put on by Skanky) told me that they had a falling out with E.A.T. Apparently it's over some legal issues, where Skanky doesn't want to be associated with their "movie night" in which they may be screening copyrighted materials for free. Smart move, guys. Good news is T informed me that they're scouting for new replacement venues, so we'll see where that goes.

Second, let's talk Austin City Limits festival.

No, we're not playing this year. Again. I know, I know, crazy right?
But our good friends from GIVERS (11:45 Friday @ Honda Stage), Mynameisjohnmichael (2:40 Sunday @ BMI stage) and Speak (12:40 Sunday @ BMI stage) are playing. These guys are fantastic. I think Speak won best new austin band in some reputable publication last year (and did i mention they're on the Skanky Possum mixtape?), MNIJM had a very successful tour recently, and when we played with GIVERS at Emo's outdoors they were just all-around nice people who put on a very fun show. These guys deserve to blow up. and fast. If you haven't heard of them, you better do some research before you go to ACL so you don't miss out. You'll feel left out when everyone else around you is singing their songs and you're standing there with folded arms. www.myspace.com/mynameisjohnmichael & www.myspace.com/hearspeakhere & http://www.blogger.com/www.myspace.com/giversmusic

Lastly, I would like to point out that my childhood-bestfriend-and-former-roomate-turned-transfer-student-at-Tulane-business-school-in-New-Orleans is coming to visit us on the 14th-17th.

We will be picking him up from the airport with a sign that reads "Babcack", long story. His name is Sean Kozar-King and if you would like to meet him then dial up our digits because you do not want to miss out on this guy's schenanigans. I can promise you nothing productive will be happening that weekend. in a good way.

That's all for now, if we actually do another show before November 19th @ Maggie Mae's then i will be sure to post it here.

always flourish,
Michael

September 2010 (shows and updates)

OK so here's what's going on this month.

S4S is back in Austin!
On the grind doing shows left and right.

On the 2nd, we set up at First Thursday (Austin's monthly block-party) and unfortunately it got rained out. All of our equipment, the pa, and the lighting set up got drenched so we hurried to take it all down narrowly avoiding electrocution! Many thanks to our friends who showed only to get poured on.

Next show is this Thursday the 9th at Red 7. Come on out cause it's a friendly venue; good sound, nice lighting, and cheap drinks all in heart of austin's music strip. (update: dunno what to think of this place, some good experiences and some not so great experiences. This past incident may keep us away from there for at least a little while haha if you were there you know what I'm talking about).
Friday, the 17th - Show @ Scoot Inn. Called the Scare for a Cure benefit. Here's the flyer, lot's of people will be here out and about doing their thing supporting lots of local music. (update: Drink In Hand Entertainment filmed us in a sxsw-esque interview, so be on the look out for that to surface in a few months. On a side note, Polysky was jazzy, fun to listen to, and had a cellist, so check 'em).

That's all for now. I'll keep the updates flowing in month-by-month from now on so make sure to check back in to see what we're up to.

xo Michael
